While a good laptop backpack is an important investment, it’s also important to take good care of it, so that to use it longer. No matter how careful and clean you are your laptop backpack gets dirty with time. Especially if you use it frequently for business, studying, or traveling, regular dust and dirt are inevitable.

If you’re taking care of your backpack regularly, there will be no need to wash it frequently, but anyway, once or twice a year your backpack will need a deep cleaning. Be careful, load the backpack properly to avoid spilling liquids and food remains. If you notice any dirt or stains, clean these spots immediately so that the dirt won’t get deep into the fabric.

Make sure to always check the label instructions. Some backpacks can be washed in the washing machine, some require hand washing, it all depends on the materials. Though it’s always recommended to wash the laptop bag by hand, if it is troublesome for you, you can wash it in the washing machine. Also note that if your backpack is leather, leather-trimmed, or has decorations and embroidery on it, you better stick with hand washing.

Whichever way you choose, don’t worry, we’ll explain both.

Hand Washing

Here’s what you’ll need for handwashing:

  • Basin or bathtub

  • Lukewarm water

  • Mild non-bleach detergent (preferably fragrance and additive-free)

  • Sponge or washcloth

  • Soft-bristled brush or an old toothbrush

  • Dry towels

Empty The Backpack

The first thing you need to do is to empty your backpack. Make sure to remove all items and leave pockets unzipped. If there are any detachable straps, pockets, or bags, take them off and wash them separately.

Brush Off Visible Dirt And Dust

Before soaking in water, look for any visible dirt, dust and if you find any dust them off. Shake the backpack to get rid of the crumbs and particles, then use a rag to wipe off any stubborn dirt. For dusting off the inner and outer seams, you can use a vacuum attachment.

If there are any loose threads hanging, cut them with scissors. Especially check the zipping areas and cut all the loose threads, so that they won’t get snagged during washing.

Pre-treat The Stains

If you notice any stains, caused by food, or drinks make sure that area is pre-treated. Gently apply some mild detergent mixed with water or some stain remover with a soft brush or toothbrush. Let it sit for 30 minutes, but no longer, as they can fade the bag.

Wash The Backpack In Lukewarm Water

Fill the sink or basin with lukewarm water and add a small amount of mild detergent. Avoid using hot water, as it can make the colors bleed out. Before soaking the backpack in water, make sure you’ve checked the labels and the backpack can be soaked.

Then place the backpack in the water. Scrub both the inside and the outside with a soft brush or cloth, focusing particularly on stains and dirty areas. Use an old toothbrush to scrub the zippers. A sponge might work better for mesh areas. Don’t overdo, stop after all the stains have been fully removed.

Rinse Thoroughly

After all the stains have been removed, drain the dirty water and fill the basin with cool clean water. Rinse the bag thoroughly and wring it out. You can rinse a lot of water by wrapping the bag in a towel and pressing it lightly.

Air-Dry

The best way to dry your backpack is to hang it out to dry it a natural way. Hang it upside down and keep the zippers unzipped. If you let it dry outdoors, it will help odors drift away. Never put it in the dryer, as the heat can damage the fabric.

Make sure the backpack is completely dry before using it.

Machine Washing

Here’s what you’ll need for machine washing:

  • Mild non-bleach detergent (fragrance and additive-free)

  • Soft brush and washcloth or sponge

  • Laundry bag

  • Towels

Empty The Backpack

Empty your backpack, make sure to check all the pockets thoroughly. Also, remove all the detachable pockets, straps, bags, and metal frames.

Brush Off The Visible Dirt And Dust

Shake out the backpack to remove all the crumbs and small particles. Brush off any visible dirt or dust using a rag or brush. For dusting off the inner and outer seams, you can use a vacuum attachment.

If there are any loose threads hanging, cut them with scissors. Especially check the zipping areas and cut all the loose threads.

Pre-treat The Stains

Gently clean the visible stains with a soft brush or sponge using lukewarm water mixed with a mild detergent or stain remover. Let it sit for 30 minutes, but no longer, as they can fade the bag.

Check the label instructions to clean the backpack right. Follow these instructions. If there is no label, then test the fabric in a less visible spot with the detergent to avoid damaging the backpack.

Machine Wash

Place the backpack inside a laundry bag or an old pillowcase, so that the zippers or straps won’t get tangled or damaged in the washer. Add a small amount of detergent and run the gentle cycle. Wash it solo, do not load the machine with other clothes.

Note that despite the label says you can wash the backpack in the washing machine, by doing so, the backpack can lose its shape. So, when choosing between handwashing and machine washing, choose to wash by hand. In this case, you won’t have to worry about damaging your backpack.
